RE-REGISTRATION/MATRICULATION OF IMPORTED CARS (CAR REGISTRATION SPAIN)

Many clients find it more convenient to bring their car to Spain, than to purchase a new one once here. We can arrange for your car to pass the necessary paperwork, present the same in the Traffic Department for the Spanish Car registration and then obtain the Spanish Registration plates.

If you are non-resident and a member of the EU, you may drive your vehicle from your home country within Spain without changing the number plates. If the car needs an ITV (the Spanish MOT), this can be carried out in Spain but will only be valid whilst the car is being driven in Spain. You can obtain insurance for your vehicle but will not be able to tax the vehicle here – you must apply to the relevant home authorities for this.

After 6 months of the vehicle being in Spain, you are obliged to change to Spanish plates (you can do this earlier).  While the car is here on foreign number plates, you are required to put “stickers” on the headlight bring them in line with Spanish regulation. To change to Spanish plates, the car must have been in the owner´s name one year.

You are granted a period of 60 days after obtaining a Residencia (as a Resident) to legally “import” your vehicle. In order to do so, you must have a Matriculation and ITV inspection, pay the relevant tax at the appropriate Hacienda and apply for a Spanish matriculation at your province’s Trafico office. We arrange this as part of our Matriculation service for car registration in Spain.

ROAD TAX

A Road Tax Certificate is obtained from your local Town Hall Office (or Ayuntamiento in some areas), and the cost will depend on the make and size of your vehicle. The tax is payable once a year in the months of March/April, and late payment will incur a penalty of 20% interest.

All vehicles must have car tax, irrespective of their number plates or country of origin. Mopeds under 50cc should also be taxed.

CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP/BUYING OR SELLING A CAR IN SPAIN

If you buy a car privately in Spain, the paperwork to change the car into your name is a very different system to that which you are probably familiar with. Unless you are fluent in Spanish, it is extremely difficult to deal with the administration department in Alicante to register the car in your name and do a change of ownership of a vehicle.

We can take the pain out of the administration, by dealing directly with the Traffic Department on your behalf. You will then receive the new ownership documents in due course which can be collected from our office.

We charge 200€ for a car change of ownership (including Traffic Department’s tax).

SPANISH DRIVING LICENSE

An EU citizen can drive in Spain with a non-Spanish license if non-resident, but there are several exceptions and you should speak to us to check your position. If you are resident, it is necessary to change your Drivers License for a Spanish License.

We can take care of the administrative system dealing with this, presenting your application in the Spanish Traffic Department. You will receive a temporary Spanish driving license until the new one is ready for collection.

RENEWAL OF SPANISH DRIVING LICENSES

Whether your license has expired naturally, or has been misplaced, we can assist in the paperwork and application of the replacement license. We can also advise and /or accompany you on the Medical Examination if you require.

VEHICLE DEBT CHECK

We would strongly advise that if you are purchasing a Spanish vehicle privately that you undertake a debt check to make sure that there is no finance outstanding, no unpaid fines, it has not been stolen, who the actual owner is, as Spanish law currently states that if you purchase a vehicle you also purchase the debt attached to that vehicle.

We charge 40€ for a car debt check. We only require a copy of the log book.
