Meet Spanish Solutions for a relaxing life in Spain.

Nothing is easy, especially related to T.I.E. cards in Spain!!

We do not like publishing until we have something absolutely clear, but in this case, we are going with what appears to be 95% sure. We have a Welsh client from La Zenia looking to move back to the UK. Yes, we know he is going in the wrong direction, but bear with us.

It looks like the below is required to terminate a TIE, a slightly drawn-out process and requires a town hall visit and a separate visit to the Foreign Office in Alicante (Maybe Orihuela city if availability).

1st – The person has to go to the town hall. You may be aware that appointments for Padron-related things are bookable from the 1st week of January currently; they are fully booked up until then.

Steps to deregister from the Padrón:

  • Contact your local ayuntamiento: (town hall)
  • Apply for a “Baja por cambio de residencia”: indicating you are moving out of Spain.

2nd Process: once the 1st is complete, the 2nd is similar to doing the TIE renewal process.

Steps to inform the Foreigners’ Office:

  • Gather necessary documents. You will need a passport, your TIE card, and a completed application form, EX-20 and “Baja por cambio de residencia”
  • Request an appointment in Alicante or Orihuela City, depending on availability. Alicante dates available are back end of December currently, into 2026. You can book an appointment at the Foreigners’ Office for a voluntary return of your TIE.
  • Attend your appointment at the location booked. You must present documents and an intention to surrender your TIE and voluntarily end your residency status.

Of course, Spanish Solutions can help, but we dont want to see you leave!!

Contact us in Cabo Roig or La Zenia if you need any more assistance.

Good mornng Ian, thankyou for your enquiry.

Leaving Spain permanently after 5+ years with a 10-year TIE requires notifying the town hall (Padrón), closing tax obligations with the Agencia Tributaria, and notifying Social Security, if applicable. While not strictly mandatory to “surrender” the TIE, removing yourself from the Padrón is critical to officially end your residency status and tax obligations. Here is the checklist for leaving Spain correctly:

      1. Deregistration from the Padrón (Baja Consular/Ayuntamiento). Go to your local Ayuntamiento (town hall) and request a baja por residencia en el extranjero, this proves you are no longer living in Spain, preventing issues with tax residency and automatic renewal systems.

      2. Tax Obligations (Agencia Tributaria). File your final income tax return (IRPF) as a tax resident for the portion of the year you were in Spain. Inform the Tax Agency of your new address abroad to ensure you are no longer considered a tax resident, stopping worldwide income tax obligations in Spain. If you used a representative (representante fiscal), notify them to close your file.

      3. TIE Card Handling. Your 10-year TIE acts as identification, but your legal residency is tied to your status. While you do not need to surrender the card, it will become invalid for residency purposes once you are no longer living in Spain and have deregistered.

      4. Healthcare and Social Security. If you are covered by public healthcare, visit your health center (Centro de Salud) to update your status.

      5. If you were employed or self-employed, ensure your employer has processed your end-of-contract paperwork or that you have deregistered from the Seguridad Social.

      We hope this helps.
