What is the Radar Covid App in Spain?

As you know we try to keep you up to date with developments in Spain, especially of local and national interest such as the Radar Covid App. Many articles are only published in Spanish, which makes it difficult for only English speakers.

Radar Covid is the application designed by the Government of Spain to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). Whether you are for or against this type of application, it is now out there and available to download.

The idea is that Radar Covid warns you anonymously of any possible contact you may have had in the last 14 days with a person who has been infected. It uses low power Bluetooth technology.

What else does the Radar Covid App do?

The Radar Covid app also allows:

  • You to anonymously communicate your positive diagnosis.
  • You to communicate the exposure anonymously to people with whom you have been in contact

It guarantees security and privacy and is 100% anonymous. They do not ask for your name, your phone number or your e-mail address.

The Spanish government has asked that all Residents download the app, although we know that many people are not even aware of its existence.

The App is already operational in 10 autonomous regions and has been downloaded by more than 3.4 million users in Spain, as at last week. It is operational in Andalusia, Cantabria, Aragon, Castilla y Leon, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, Murcia and Extremadura. By mid-September it should be possible to download it, and it function in the rest of the autonomous communities. (It does download already in the Valencia Community). If you are interested just look in google play or similar for Radar Covid. Your phone will use bluetooth and can notify you if you have been close to someone who reported having Covid-19.

It is similar to the one that has been launched in Germany and Italy, and is already the most downloaded app in the last two weeks. Of course the more people who use it, the more useful it will be to track and trace infections.

Effectiveness of the Radar Covid App

The Vice President has stressed that to increase the effectiveness of Radar Covid it is “important” that everyone uses it and has urged the entire population to use it. We are sure all of you have your own views on the pandemic, the handling of it by various countries, even if it is exaggerated and will have on this new App too.

I am so happy to be living in Spain and believe that they are handling the situation correctly. if everyone followed the rules this would help all governments deal with this Virus and we could all get back to living but to many are thinking it is not their responsibility. My Husband and I are keeping in touch with everyone via face time & Telephone.

Will we be denied entry to the Canary Islands if we haven’t an I phone so haven’t been able to download the radar Covid app? We are an elderly couple booked to go to Tenerife on the 22/12/20.
