It is worth visiting the Murcian city of Cartagena any time of the year but one of the most special times is the second part of September when there is the ten-day Carthaginians & Romans Festival September 15th to September 24th.

The event remembers the city’s rich history with battle re-enactments, marches, a wedding, and fireworks. The festival provides history lessons and moments of great enjoyment.

Cartagena feels very proud of its past and this festival is unique in all of Spain. More than 4000 Carthaginians take part in this festival which started in 1990 and each year becomes more impressive.

During the festival days, they remember all the heroic acts that occurred in the period when the city was conquered by the Romans, with sessions of the Roman Senate, the Roman Circus, and even the great battle for the city.

The festival traditionally opens with the lighting of a sacred fire and the inauguration of the Festival Camp beside the Estadio Municipal. The festival camp has numerous places to eat and admire the amazing costumes of both the Romans and the Carthaginians.

On the final day, the fire is extinguished and a big fireworks display takes place.

We thoroughly recommend that if you have not visited Cartagena during this fiesta that you try to. The Great Battle and the Victory parade are particularly good.
